The Word On The Street

The day's events, politics, pop-culture, family life, maybe even what’s on the dinner menu—all of this and more is likely to be found here. Visit regularly to hear the WORD on the street from our MAs and friends in Israel.
February 9th is Tu Bishvat in Israel
09 February, 2009
February 9th is Tu Bishvat in Israel, the day of tree planting, accompanied by the timely flowering of the almond trees. Believers are glad to be reminded of God's words to Jeremiah: (Jer. 1:11,12) " Jeremiah, what do you see?" " I see a branch of an almond tree" (sha-ched in Hebrew). " You have seen well for I am ready to perform (sho-ched in Hebrew) My word." Most Israelis don’t realize that as they eagerly plant trees in the land they love, they are fulfilling God's word, at least in foreshadowing, that Israel's "desert will bloom". The Jewish immigrants, returning to the land in the late 19th century, found a desolate land without any shade. They set about planting trees on hill and dale and today it is said 240 million trees have been planted. The current “Tree for Every Citizen” project is designed to enable community residents to plant trees themselves. Hundreds of thousands of students and adults will be planting trees on Tu Bishvat. The following day is Election Day in Israel. Believers are having special prayer meetings, asking God to raise up the men of His choice: "Trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified" (Isaiah 61:3).
