There is nowhere in the world now that we Jews are safe
09 December, 2008
"There is nowhere in the world now that we Jews are safe," is the spoken and unspoken thought abroad since the Pakistani terrorist in India confessed their intention had been to " kill as many Jews as possible." Up until now many young Israelis have seen the Far East as a place to lose their persecuted identity and have dreamt of going there at the end of their compulsory army service. They are very conscious, at the end of their Israeli military experience, that they have 'escaped death', yet when faced with their freedom, many have sought also to 'escape life' in the eastern religions.
"A large incursion into Gaza is inevitable and imminent", an army spokesman declares. Israel's forbearance at the stream of missiles that have resumed, even during the continuing 'ceasefire' with Gaza, is almost exhausted. Six soldiers were hospitalised after a missile hit their army base in the south. One soldier has lost one of his legs and possibly the second also.
"What other country would sit back while missiles scream over its border day and night?" the targeted ask. Yet everbody dreads the loss of young life an incursion will involve, and nobody has any illusions about being able to put an end to missiles. The 'ceasefire' has allowed Gaza time to re-arm through the tunnels from Egypt. Army intelligence says Hizbalah in Lebanon have also re-armed, with Syria's help, and could now reach "anywhere in Israel".
If there is nowhere in the world we are safe as Jews, is there nowhere in Israel either?
