The Word On The Street
"The WORD on the street" is a way for those living in the United States to be connected with those living in the Land. The day's events, politics, pop-culture, family life, maybe even what’s on the dinner menu—all of this and more is likely to be found here. Visit regularly to hear the WORD on the street from our MAs and friends in Israel.
A Day of Mourning
07 November, 2008
Today, 4th Oct. is Memorial Day of Rabin's assassination 13 years ago. Most Israelis still feel this as a day of mourning, if no longer for the loss of Rabin then certainly for the loss of unity in Israeli society. Jew assassinated Jew, and the sorrow and shame of that has not faded in this small nation still fighting for survival. The consequent divide between religious and secular is presently exacerbated by a new uprising of aggression towards Arabs by right wing ‘extremists’, while leftist ‘activists' ignore blockades and sail into Gaza's waterfront to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Israel's very real interest in the American elections boils down to the question: ‘Will Obama give East Jerusalem to the Arabs?’ A passion for Jerusalem is still our one uniting factor.
