Yossi Ovadia :
It is a modern sociologist’s dream—congregations of one hundred and twenty people, but among those people, fifteen different countries of origin are represented, and the service (in Hebrew) is translated into both Russian and English. “A fine Israeli Salad,” is how Pastor Yossi Ovadia refers to his congregation, borrowing a sociologist’s favorite expression of what a culture should be. The difference here, is that the bowl that holds the elements is not a country, not a culture, not a sociologist’s fancy, but instead, the bowl is He who holds His people and calls them his own, the Lord Yeshua. Born into a traditional Jewish family as the son of a father who worked in the Rabbinate (the state’s official Jewish religious authority), Yossi, at the age of twenty-three, came to faith in Yeshua. Ministering to a congregation made of Sabras, older acclimatized immigrants, and new immigrants from about fifteen different countries, is a daunting task, but by seeking to integrate these diverse members into Israeli culture (teaching them Hebrew among other things), Yossi and his co-pastor Israel Harel are able to establish these brothers and sisters in both the Word of God, and the Land of His people. By joining together with fellow believing Arab congregations to minister to all in the Galilee, Yossi, Israel, and Kehilat Haderech (The Way Congregation) make complete the vision of the Scriptures’ teaching on the basis of a church: a body of people united on one common ground, that which trumps all sociological study, suggestion, and speculation, the truth of the Gospel, and the words of the Lord Yeshua.
